      Chemical City exhibition

      Hello globe-trotters!

It's been a while since we don't write in our blog, but it's been crazy since we had a baby in September at the same time that orders started to be delivered. It's been a long adventure, but now we can say that we have a proper e-commerce where you can buy your Classic KS!

Today we'd love to share a new collaboration. A few months ago Lynn Hugill from MIMA School Art and Design in Middlesbrough offered us the opportunity to join the exhibition Chemical City as an example of sustainable fashion. We didn't think it twice as we loved the idea from day one. We are happy that students can learn from sustainable materials and products as they are future designers and it's important they are aware of plastic pollution and how sustainable and slow fashion can help to fight this problem.

The exhibition called Chemical City started on 26th November 2021 and will be available until 24th April 2022. It travels through time explaining the importance of plastic manufacturing in the area of Tees Valley and finishes in the actual plastic issue showing sustainable alternatives like our Classic KS Coconut.

The impact of chemical and synthetic materials on human lives and on the health of the planet has been extensive. While plastics remain an important part of our material landscape, we now know that they cause environmental harm and one section of the exhibition explores waste and toxicity. A showcase of contemporary products presents contemporary innovations in more sustainable fashion.

Once again, we'd like to thank all the team of MIMA School for taking us into consideration, especially Lynn Hugill.

Hope you like this new collaboration!

      Presale updates!

      Presale updates!

      Hello globe-trotters!

Hope you are having an amazing weekend!

Today we'd love to share some news about the presale status.

First of all, we'd love to inform that the production was finished on 12th August 2021 and it arrived to our warehouse the following week. Since the sneakers arrived to the warehouse located in Barcelona, we've been working so hard to provide all the information to the staff and also to the courier companies. Unfortunately this process has been longer than expected as we needed to solve many issues and some of the staff is out of the office due to summer vacations. However, we can confirm that all the orders have been transferred to the proper team and also the courier companies have all the information.

Yesterday Sergio went to the warehouse (Alexandra couldn't travel because she's 39 weeks pregnant!) to check the sneakers and also to close all the pending details with the warehouse team. Everything looks great and deliveries will start between Monday and Tuesday! Stay tuned as you will receive an email with the tracking number.

One pair of sneakers will be delivered with a compostable bag while more than two pairs will be with recycled cardboard boxes. Inside your shoe box you will find your cotton shoe bag and your postcard. We have two models of postcards: "Life is short and the world is wide" is made of recycled cardboard and "Say yes to new adventures" is made of grape waste.

Below you can find some pics from the warehouse:

We are so excited that finally our project will become a reality! What started as a Kickstarter campaign now will be a sustanaible and vegan sneakers brand. Thanks to all of you! We are so grateful with all your support and patience.

Feel free to post a pic with your Classic KS and tag us! We'd love to see you wearing your KUMI Sneakers!

      Big hug!

      Let's go to the beach!

      Let's go to the beach!

It's time to enjoy our shores: doing some sports as surfing or kayaking, sunbathing at the beach or swimming. It's summer, a wonderful season!

However, it's starting to be more common to find trash at the beach. It's a pity but, unfortunately, it's our reality. Some of this waste comes from people who after spending the full day at the beach they decide not to pick up all the stuff they bring, leaving some bottles or cans, plastic bags, food waste, cigarettes, and a long disgusting list.

Other part of the plastic waste comes from the sewerage (Greenpeace, 2019) as for example straws, pieces of bottles, ear buds, bags or bottle caps.

The solution to stop this marine litter is in hands of single-use plastic producers that should replace them for reusable ones. But we have big news! From last month, the European Union has introduced a new directive that restricts certain single-use plastic products. It's time to say goodbye to the following list (OCU, 2021):

      · Single-use plastic cutlery (spoons, forks, knives, and chopsticks).
      · Single-use plastic plates.
      · Straws
      · Cotton ear buds made of plastic.
      · Plastic sticks to hold balloons.
      · Oxodegradable plastics and polystyrene food containers and cups.

These products constitute 70% of Mediterranean Sea litter according to the European Commission (Forbes, 2019). So we are so happy that this directive has been approved and starts working from now!

Even it's time to celebrate good news, it's important to be respectful with the environment when going to the beach. Always we should pick up everything that we bring and never leave trash. Also it's a good practice to pick all the litter that we find there and help to have cleaner beaches.

A few days ago we wrote an article talking about 5 ways to reduce our waste. Small steps that can we can add to our daily rutine that have a great impact to our environment.

Also we'd love to share a project called Upcycling Oceans from Ecoalf. They work to remove the litter from marine ecosystems and give it a second life creating top quality yarn which they also use to produce their own clothes collection.

The perks of adopting an animal

The perks of adopting an animal

One of the pillars of our vegan sneakers brand is helping to achieve a society where animal rights are respected so they have a dignified life, free from exploitation, abuse and testing.

For this reason, we collaborate with FAADA. The Spanish non-profit foundation whose mission is to promote respect for animals in social, legal and educational spheres. For example, if they find any animal living in bad conditions they take legal actions to change this situation, situations that can happen from any house to a circus or zoo. We are so proud of their work and we recommend to stay tuned at their  social media channels where they expose causes that everyone can help from an easy online signature.

Also we have a partnership with Protectora de Barcelona, a local and independent sanctuary that take in abandoned, homeless and/or abused animals until they find the perfect family to spend the rest of their life with. We love to visit them and create a real bond with the staff and the animals, you can check on Instagram the reel we made of our last visit.

Thanks to these collaborations, with each pair that we sell, we are also helping abandoned and rescued animals to find a new home and a perfect family. So we'd love to write this post about the importance of adopting, instead of buying, an animal.

First of all, why is important to adopt?

      - Only in Spain, in 2019, 306.000 dogs and cats were picked up by animal shelters. The main reasons are unwanted litters of puppies and kittens, animal behaviour problemans and the end of the hunting season (FundaciĂłn Affinity, 2020). Unfortunately, most of these animals aren't adopted and they will spend the rest of their life without knowing what is to have a family and real love.

Consequently, most of the shelters are full and they cannot come in new animals. So any time someone is adopting an animal, it's also helping another one as it's leaving an empty space for the new one, without the need of slaughter which unfortunately still happens nowadays.

      - When buying an animal, you are also promoting the exploitation and abuse of them. Females are used to reproduce as if they were machines until they can no longer breed. Then, they are abandoned or slaughtered. And if the breeder is ilegal they don't take care of the animal conditions and sell them with many illnesses and problems. Thanks to adoption, this situation could go to an end.

      - The perfect match exists with an adopted animal. When rescuing a dog or a cat, you aren't limited to a breed, you are opened to many options that definetely one of them will be the perfect new family member.

Not convinced enough? Below you can find true stories from our globe-trotters who decided to adopt a new family member, starting from our own experience.

"We adopted Kygo, our dog, last year when he was two months old. He was born during the COVID-19 lockdown in Spain and from the moment he was born, his owners didn’t want him, neither his siblings. Luckily an animal shelter rescued them and found each puppy a nice family and home.

Since day one, we’ve been so happy to have a new family member. We decided to adopt an amstaff even knowing all the prejudices regarding this dog breed and we know we’ll never regret this decision.

Far from being aggressive, he is so grateful, affectionate and happy. He loves to spread kisses and his favourite hobby is sleeping as close as possible to us. When we walk with him through the street he greatly enjoys when somebody pets him or compliments him. And any time we meet a person with a similar dog, we constantly share the same thought “it’s a pity that people think these dogs are bad”."

      Alexandra, Sergio & Kygo

"Jack, gordito, ratoncio,... since he came into my life I've never been alone, he's always happy to see me even if I leave for 5 minutes, always cheerful, always ready to go out, ready for a walk or for an excursion, and above he's always ready to eat. It's the first face I see when I wake up and the last one before I go to bed.
Without hesitation he has made me happier.

Why adopt? Because there are many abandoned animals willing to love and make themselves loved. If you take a look to all of them, you'll see that they are all great!"

      Mimi & Jack

"With Thor we learn every day. After being locked in a cage for more than 8 years, he is still a very grateful dog, who is happy every time he sees us and is very protective. At the beginning he was shy and wouldn’t even bark but he adapted so easily and he is SO good with everyone. There are always doubts when you bring an adopted dog into your home, but with Thor it has been a very easy path. It has been a very wise decision, and even though we were told that it is rare for a young couple to adopt a dog over 10 years old, we could not be more proud and happy to have him with us, he is family. Everyone says that he is so lucky to have us, but honestly I think we are the luckiest."

      Carla, Hector & Thor

"After a year sharing moments with Snatch and more than 10 with Hiro, they keep each other company when we are not at home ... And considering that according to Google we were not going to get them to be friends... We cannot be happier with the decision to adopt them both, we've created a diverse and peculiar family that we are very proud."

      Laura, Mauro, Snatch & Hiro

"We are Sol and David. We adopted Kylo and Obi on January 2020, it was a rushed decision but one of the bests we've ever made.

Our cat, Kuro, had recently died unexpectedly at a young age. We missed him a lot and we thought it was too early to welcome a new cat just yet.

However, Encarna, one of the volunteers at the animal shelter had a different idea.
A week after we told her about Kuro, she found a layer of 4 kittens who needed a new home. Two of them had been lucky enough to find a place to go but the other pair was still waiting and she thought we would be a good fit for them.

We were very reluctant at first but we decided to meet kittens anyway. As soon as we saw them playing and running around the shelter, we realised we really wanted to take them home with us that same afternoon.

When they first got home they were a little shy, especially Obi. Luckily, they adapted really quickly to their new home and their new human housemates.

A year and a half latter - a very particular year and a half later- we are really thankful to Encarna for introducing the sweetest, most fun cats to us.

If you are thinking about adopting a pet, don't hesitate, your furry friend will bring joy and the good kind of mess to your home"

      Sol, David, Kylo & Obi

"Having Coca and Taxi in our lives means feeling constantly loved. We adopted both of them, and there is no better feeling in the world that knowing that, when you get home, no matter how good or bad your day was, they will be there, waiting to give you their whole attention and love. They are part of our family and we simply cannot imagine our life without them. Adopting means giving them a new chance at life, and we feel we helped them just as much as they did with us."

      Laura, Tomeu, Coca & Taxi

All of these stories have a happy ending; even though many animals, especially dogs and cats, are abandoned and end up in shelters where sadly wait to find someone to take care of them. We hope that these experiences hold an example of how adopting an animal can change your life and the life of an animal. And if you are planning to increase your family with a pet, please consider adopting before buying and before rejecting one for its appearance, age or breed, give it a chance and you will change its life and surely yours too.

      KUMI Bag: the anti-odorant

      KUMI Bag: the anti-odorant

Have you ever wondered how can you comfortably travel while helping to sustainability? Today, we’re launching the KUMI BAG section, where we’ll present you different useful and sustainable products that you can take into consideration when preparing your bags.

Are you ready to let your globe-trotter adventure start?

Today, we want to introduce you to nuud. For those who don’t know what does it consist of, it is basically a “deodorant” or, better said, an anti-odorant. While the conventional deodorants hide the smell of sweat through harmful products that affect not only the environment but also our skin, nuud bases its formula in erasing the bacteria that produces that smell. So, the main difference between deodorant and anti-odorant, is that in the first one, the product conceals the smell whereas the second one prevents the appearance of its cause -bacteria-

Why do we love this product? Because it is vegan, cruelty free and with no plastic presence. It also takes care of the environment and our skin, by eliminating the main used ingredients in the conventional deodorants such as aluminium, parabens and petrochemicals.

Not feeling curious enough yet? Well, here it comes the icing on the cake… one single application can last up to 7 days! Yes, we know you may be like “wait, what?”

It sounds amazing but you are probably wondering how it really feels using it, aren’t you? Let me tell you about my personal experience.

I started using nuud at the beginning of the year after reading about it a lot. I was attracted to the idea of trying it myself, but at the same time, it scared me as I was so used to the conventional deodorants, and changing this habit sounded tough to me. Taking advantage of being at home all day long due the pandemic situation, I took the leap!

The first time I used it, it felt really different to the concept we have in mind when thinking about deodorants. I had to exfoliate and wash my armpits before the application, which is not in spray or roll-on but a thick cream that takes a bit to be fully absorbed. However, once dry, it doesn’t stain the clothes at all, which thing was a great surprise for me.

nuud says you won’t have to reapply the product in 3 to 7 days (depending on each person), but I had the feeling of smelling a bit after 2 days -I know now that it was because the body took a bit to eliminate all the aluminium waste-. The following applications were kind of the same weird feeling, a thick cream that doesn’t absorb immediately -maybe I am too impatient though-. But that was it, all my “problems” were that I couldn’t just run out of the shower and go straight to the street but had to wait a bit to let the product be absorbed, after that: no smells, no stains, nothing!

Nowadays, I feel confident about the product and myself using it. At the beginning it felt weird not to use deodorants daily, but now I feel happy about it. I apply nuud twice a week and I promise there’s no smell at all, non-even after my gym sessions!

Have you ever experienced that feeling of reaching home after a long journey with that characteristic sweat smell on your clothes? Well, it doesn’t happen to me anymore. I am now more than proud to have decided to give it a try as I know I am contributing to enhance our planet while being more than comfortable by using it.
